The story follows Alfie YellowNeckedMouse, a lad of twelve who has magic. In Centrallis, young magicians are supposed to be taken to their Sacri Palacii and indoctrinated into the order of holybeasts (the Sacaeredosse).
Instead, Alfie's parents flee to a sanctuary with the intention of keeping him hidden and safe. However, hiding a gift that is as instinctive as a fish swimming in water is easier said than done.
Follow Alfie as he meets new allies in Magician Sherman MountainTiger and Bill Chough, his assistant. Together, they will have to endeavour to undo a very serious mistake made by the young mouse.

The main characters:
Alfie YellowNeckedMouse is the first character we meet. He is a young magician, not yet in his teens. The law states that all magicians must be indoctrinated into the ranks of the holybeasts (Sacaeredosse) and that failure to comply will lead to death. However, his parents decide to run with him to the nearest liberty, a place with its own legal systems that is safe from the gods and their followers.

Belle YellowNeckedMouse is Alfie's friend. They are the same species, but not related. This young mouse has seen rather more hardship than Alfie. She is skilled with tools and can make almost anything that takes her fancy.

Magician Sherman MountainTiger is an older, more experienced independent magician. He lives in the liberty which Alfie's parents have decided to live in. He is wise, but has a quick temper, which he likes to express with loud bangs and noxious smoke.

Bill Chough is Sherman's assistant. At least, he has been pushing for that official title for quite some time. Sherman is more likely to refer to him as a loyal and valued friend. Bill's frustration and impatience is usually expressed with a quick wit and sarcastic tongue.
