Sports

Another important part of Centrallis life is sport.  Those creatures that have no interest in religion tend to have a passion for at least one sporting activity.

The most popular sports are:

  • Chimes: Field strategy game, in which two teams of ten players attempt to score as many chimes as possible before all are out.

  • Rosebridge Mead: Field game, in which two teams of seven players attempt to get a barrel (these days, usually filled with water) over the line at their end of the field first.  Rough tackling is permitted.  Should a team break the barrel, they forfeit the game and the opposite team immediately wins.  Prize: one keg of mead (traditionally).

Sports most often played in schools and children's clubs are:

  • Hedgehogs / Urchins: A bowling game, played with black, silver and gold paper twists and a spiky ball (called a "hedgehog" or "urchin").  The paper is scattered on the field of play, and each player then rolls their hedgehog / urchin over the paper, trying to collect as much gold as possible.  Black deducts a point, while silver is worth five points and gold is worth ten.

Other common sporting activities include:

  • Steam carriage racing

  • Hot air and gas balloon racing

  • Archery

  • Tracking (this usually involves pets, such as beetles, to trace an item)

  • Shin kicking

  • Swimming and diving championships

  • Boat racing (usually the rowing variety, but a few steamboat races have appeared in recent years)
