I make my identity as an LGBTQ+ author no secret. I'm proud of who I am and it influences both my life and my work.
However, recent shifts on social media platforms (particularly Facebook, Instagram and X, formerly Twitter) have made me reflect on the impact these online spaces have on marginalised communities; myself included.
As a writer, these changes impact me personally, but also professionally. They are more than a mere matter of discomfort; they affect our safety, visibility and the respect that we receive online when we interact with friends, colleagues and readers.
We should not have to censor ourselves. We should not have to edit our posts or books and ask ourselves, "Have I revealed too much of myself?"
As much as it may harm my visibility online, you will no longer find me on Facebook or Instagram. I have already left X. If you do hope to find me online, I can still be found on Discord, Tumblr – and I am just starting out on Bluesky.
